Duality: the nature in which anything and everything holds opposing truths.
It is often reinforced that we can only be THIS or THAT, but not both. I’ve been told this story my entire life. “Darling, you can’t do both.” How could you think that you could both be a working mother and also homeschool your children? What made you think you could run multiple businesses and still raise your family? How are you going to go to graduate school with all you have going on? You can’t possibly have time for yourself when you give so much to others! The list goes on and on.
The truth is that we CAN be/do both things. We can be sweet and kind and also protect what is ours. We can work hard, but also know how to let loose and play. We can be invested in relationships with others and also invested in self. We can have knowledge of something certain and belief in something uncertain. We can be both strong and weak. We can live in chaos and in order. We can plan things and leave them to chance. We can be logical and emotional.
Choosing to be multifaceted will scare those who are married to one idea of what someone can be. You might even lose those you love most from your circle because they can’t fathom being both in the light AND the dark. Some will gladly come along for the ride, some will meet you where you are going, and others have an entirely different path altogether.
There is beauty and magic in embracing our dual nature as human beings. Duality helps us to understand that perception is not set in stone. Old perceptions, ascribed meanings, and other “truths” can be overturned and re-written. This is because any perceived value is not an absolute truth, but a relative one. The nature of duality allows for the redefining of all things, if we allow ourselves to let go of the parts of ourselves which have been clinging so tightly to a single way of thinking.
