We went to the infinity pool this evening at the Ole Sereni Hotel to take a quick dip and met some really cool people while we were there. Ana and her two sons Aro (8) and Nikko (6) were swimming when we got there. She is originally from Kenya, but married a man from the Netherlands and started a family. They still live in the Netherlands, but try to come down to Kenya for a few weeks each summer. She and I visited about what nationality I was and what brought me to Nairobi. As I was taking pictures of the girls, she offered to help Jade swim across the length of the pool and let Jade ride on her back, which was incredibly sweet. Since Jade is the same age as Aro, they played together well. After about 20 minutes at the pool, another little boy came and jumped in and started splashing around. His name is Oliver and he is 10 years old. We learned that his family is visiting only for a couple days on their way to do other travel and that they are from China. He told us that he really didn’t like the 8-hour plane ride, but didn’t mind the movies available on the plane.
As I was making introductions with all of these new people, especially the children, I realized how many children from other countries speak a foreign language. The child from China speaks two languages and the children from the Netherlands are fluent in three! Both of the girls told me that they would like to be fluent in another language, so it looks like we will be working on that soon.
